Law School aspirants will now have to pass an All India Bar Exam, conducted by BCI. It has been made mandatory for those seeking Law as their profession. This exam is meant to check the basic knowledge and skills of the aspirants. The examination will be conducted twice a year. A chance for re-appearance will be given to those failing in the first attempt. The form fee for this entrance test will be Rs 1,300 per candidate; for more convenience, it will be conducted in 9 languages.
Also Dr. M.Veerappa Moily – Minister of Law and Justice looking to overhaul Indian legal education system. His consultation with multiple groups and universities yielded some recommendations - 4 national level institutions called Institutes of Advanced Legal Studies and Research to be established as Centres of Excellence , focus on research and upgradation of faculty skills.
In every state, a National Law University is to be established as a school of excellence. Public-private participation model for law schools with specialized focus is to be encouraged and an empowered committee will evaluate 913 Law schools and upgrade them accordingly.
Year 2010 passed out students have opposed All India Bar Exam, Students feel there was no prior information about the paper – no guidelines from BCI or State Bar Councils. Many companies, law firms and offices are revoking their placement offers, citing the exam. They face zero future guarantee of placements.
Experts believe that CLAT will see an increased number of students in the coming years. In a direct comparison, about 250,000 students pursue Common Admission Test (CAT), the entrance exam for the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) for approximately 1,500 seats.
