AddPR.com - The planting season is almost here and this home gardening idea can add flair to any garden. Maurice Chin, a backyard gardener, amazed friends by growing his own square watermelon and agrees it has brought a lot of fun for his home garden efforts.
The excitement started for him when he first heard that Asian farmers had caused a stir by introducing these unusual fruits to the market. Japan may be better known for electronic trends than agriculture, but, in that country, the square watermelon has become a sensation. It was almost an instant hit in upscale stores, taking top honors among the in crowd. Farmers there originally thought a square shape was a great idea because it takes up less space in the refrigerator, but it turned out to be a runaway fashion success.
He thought what a fun challenge it would be to train a naturally round watermelon to become square. After a few failed attempts, he finally grew his own version and shows how to in his book Grow Your Own Square Watermelon. It is a step-by-step guide that shows what watermelons are best suited for training and how to create the conditions for making it square.
While watermelons usually grow in hotter climates, there are varieties that grow in more temperate planting zones. Maurice grew his square watermelon in Toronto, Canada, under less than ideal conditions using home-made molds to form the square shape. He says that using the correct mold size for the chosen watermelon is critical.
For gardeners who like to explore the exotic, the square watermelon is sure to be a great conversation piece among friends and neighbors. It also creates entertaining activities for children, and make for interesting stories to share with friends on social networks such as MySpace, Flickr (with photos) or YouTube (with videos).
