(2007-02-08) UVic Student Gives Control Of His Life To Website Visitors

University of Victoria student Jeremy David Peters has created a “Choose Your Own Adventure” website where visitors literally choose his adventures and he acts them out in real life. Visitors make suggestions, and then they get voted on.

VICTORIA - University of Victoria student Jeremy David Peters has created a “Choose Your Own Adventure” website where visitors literally choose his adventures and he acts them out in real life. Visitors make suggestions, and then they get voted on.

“I always liked Choose Your Own Adventure books, and I was interested to see what would happen if one was acted out in real life. The Internet and technology of today, smart phones and wireless internet connections, are perfectly suited to let users make decisions in real time. I’m hoping to incorporate that sort of technology into the site.” Said Peters about his website www.jpony.com.

There is a movement on the Internet called “Web 2.0” that embraces the participation of users, and encourages collaboration, interactivity, community and the sharing of information. Jeremy decided to take those principles and incorporate them into the “real world”

Steve Rubel, a popular blogger (www.micropersuasion.com) and social media guru wrote on his website "You've heard of the Subservient Chicken, now here comes the human version. Jeremy David isn't just tapping into the wisdom of crowds, he's living it. On his blog he's letting readers direct his life. He's basically open sourcing it all, transitioning control of his life over to the readers of his website."

In August of 2007, approximately 9 months from now, Jeremy is embarking on a year long trip around the world. Visitors have already directed him to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, so over the next ten months he will transition complete control of his travels to his website.

“Travel shows and reality TV are incredibly popular, and this takes those two mediums to the next level. Few people have the opportunity to watch a travel show and say ‘go here and do this’. Now everyone can.” Said Peters.
